Flower detailing

Another practise sketch. One aspect I am not happy about is the flower detailing towards the bottom, the clusters look more like shrubs than flowers, having said that the proportions and perspective view are relatively accurate.

Hospital design

A sketch of an ideal entrance to a children's hospital. It needs a water colour wash but I think the basis of the idea is communicated.

Proportions- human scale

Here I drafted out the sizes and forms of people doing different activities. It helped make my drawing look a little less rigid, despite the obvious need for more practice.

This is what health care facilities SHOULD look like...

Thomas Heatherwick's proposed design for a cancer drop in center near Leeds city centre. His model is inspired by potted plants.

A breath of fresh air.
A patch of green in a morbid grey landscape.
A space to re-cooperate.

That is what I see and hope to work with designers who share the same vision in my career as a Landscape Architect .

Crown shyness

Crowns of mature trees do not touch each other. A canopy of channel gaps are formed because o this.

Some people believe the reason is for trees to share resources and stay healthy.

Another theory is that they do it to refrain from wind damage such as abrasion and collision.

Is this something we are yet to discover?

A subjective sense of place- Someone's home

I visited Alney Island in Gloucester as part of a site we are briefed to design in our design module. My first impression of the site was it was purposeless, lost, disconnected as a site in itself and over grown. I saw many opportunities for the site but overall it is a piece of green land with some vandalism.

Putting another perspective into this, some people see this as a potential home. A place to go to at the end of the day. To sleep. Eat. Live in. This will be a significant consideration for my design proposal, to retain the current uses of the site and simply add to the use rather than strip away the existing uses as I believe this is not my right. To take someone's home away and implement strategies that kick them out.

The two tents are said to be a couple who reside here.

What happened to public safety?

From exploring the whole site of Alney Island, Gloucester I came across multiple health and safety hazards that were not mitigated against at all. The lack of purpose allocated to the site does not justify the risk of public safety. There are enough dog walkers and cyclers which should justify the implementation of effective boundaries to be put in place.

Gloucester City Council outlines its need to reduce crime and vandalism- but how can this be addressed if simple safety mechanisms such as a fence are not put in place against physical risks?

What do you think?

Examples below:

Exposed railway with a measly, metal gate as a separation

No mitigation what-so-ever between a public footpath and the widened channel of the river severn.

A low motorway barrier which is mainly used to prevent cars from going off the dual carriageway and nothing to prevent people climbing up onto the road.

The only boundary being brambles between a foot path and again the river severn.

Landscape Issue- My First Publication

HOW IS THE LACK OF DIVERSITY IN VISUALISATIONS CREATING A BARRIER FOR APPLICANTS FROM ETHNIC MINORITIES TO THE FIELD OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE?

Writing is my expression of change.

Collage to connote a message

We were tasked to do a generic survey of a site using a collaging technique:

This was useful in a PowerPoint presentation as the image can be used as an attraction for the audience but they are forced to listen to you explain it as there are no words present.

It also offers the present visual ques for elements of their presentation to talk about and memorable.

Academia- discovering myself as a designer

I have recently discovered secondary referencing through writing my dissertation. This is a new skill I have acquired through my academic writing.

Writing my dissertation has inspired me to take part in future academia, such as doing a student charade with international students about Islamic Gardens that I will later document.

 I feel as though through this first semester of my final year I have discovered some of my key skills sets as a designer that allow me to stand out from other undergraduates;
Academic writing
Speaking in front of others
Presentations
I believe these are key skills that not all graduates have when entering professional practice as a lot of people lack confidence.

I can draw, I can do photoshop but I prefer to write, to research, look at reports and do some sketches.

GA Hardworks

On reflection I struggled with this part of the assignment as I could not visualise how the materials would look together across the site. D...
