Crown shyness

Crowns of mature trees do not touch each other. A canopy of channel gaps are formed because o this.


Some people believe the reason is for trees to share resources and stay healthy. 


Another theory is that they do it to refrain from wind damage such as abrasion and collision. 


Is this something we are yet to discover?
