SketchUp bridge for Sustainable Technology

I wanted to share this post as it was a small milestone for me. I find myself more capable of using SketchUp the more I am force to interact with it. I had to create an axonometric for a hard construction detail of decking. I was dreading this the whole semester and left it last minute to complete.

Fortunately I found myself enjoying the process of designing this as there was a lot of problem solving and I had to mentally disassemble the design to create the axonometric.

PROCESS

I created the footing for the decking with the correct heights and worked out which part would be sunken underground

I drew out the parimetre of the decking and began to mark up where the beams and joists would go

I created the 3-D joists and beams

I lined it all up together

I began placing the beams with a certain distance apart

I then had to insert the joists

I attached the posts into the gaps between the joists which took a bit of time to line up accurately

I had to layer the joists in 2 separate layers which was difficult to avoid interrupting the grid beneath

FINAL LOOK - I peeled away the decking board so that the viewer could see the structure beneath the decking

I completed this within half a day

Night time visual improved

These visualizations are intended to show the lighting strategy for the area at night. I found the initial visualization did not highlight the lighting strategy, it blended in too well with the background. Adding a brighter white in the center of the lighting span helped illuminate the extent of the lighting and show the strength of the lights too.

Layout plan for sequential drawings

Further to my self-critique on my design work layout I committed to this and planned out the layout for my sequential drawings.

I find this layout to be clear, effective, geometric, ordered and it drags the eyeline into a time sequence which is the aim of these drawings.

On reflection I struggled with this part of the assignment as I could not visualise how the materials would look together across the site. D...
